Tutor Training Sessions

Our Story

About

While mentorship skills are acquired through teaching experience, tutors can get a considerable head start by receiving some professional guidance early on. Our Tutor Training Sessions (TTS) aim to provide prospective high school tutors with the tips and techniques necessary to successfully teach young students.

TTS are two hour sessions that include a short lecture, lesson observation, and small group activities. TTS are directed by Angelo Moreno, an award-winning orchestra director with over 20 years of experience as a conductor and nearly 30 years of experience as a private music teacher. Several veteran tutors and ALTO Officers will join each session as moderators.

The lecture, led by Angelo Moreno, covers general information about how to teach students, what skills to focus on, how to plan lessons, how to keep students focused and motivated, how to communicate with parents, and how to maintain utmost levels of professionalism. Tips, tricks, and techniques to help students will also be shared by veteran tutors. A Q&A session will wrap up the lecture section.

After the lecture, tutors will be divided up into several breakout rooms by instrument categories. Moderators will lead these small groups. Small group activities will begin with some tips and techniques dedicated to that particular instrument category. An extended discussion will follow. A series of mock lesson simulations will wrap up this session.

At the end of the session, moderators will take a roll call of tutors present in each breakout room. These tutors will become ALTO Certified Tutors and receive a certificate for proof of training shortly after.

Plans & Pricing

Individual TTS:

These sessions are meant to certify individual tutors. Sessions are held once a month on a predetermined date. Tutors can sign up on our TTS Calendar. The fee for individual tutor certification is $10 for volunteer tutors and $15 for paid tutors. Volunteer tutors can request a fee waiver.

Once the signup form is submitted, tutors will receive a confirmation email containing the payment link. The fee waiver request link will also be sent in this confirmation email. We accept credit cards, debit cards, and Paypal payments. Once we receive the payment or approve the fee waiver request, a second confirmation email will be sent with the Zoom link.

After attending the TTS, tutors will receive individual certification by ALTO. Tutors cannot lose their individual certification. Certificates will be sent shortly after the meeting as a PDF.

Individual tutor certification provides great benefits for tutors. The tips and techniques gained during TTS give tutors a huge advantage when starting their teaching career. ALTO Certified Tutors also tend to be favored by the tutoring program.

Program TTS:

These sessions are meant to certify the entire tutoring program. Sessions are held upon request by the tutoring program. Programs can request a session here. Once the program requests a session, we will send the Program Coordinators a signup form for each tutor to fill out. The fee for certification is $10 per volunteer tutors and $15 per paid tutor.

The tutoring program will also receive program certification. However, programs can lose their certification if they fail to certify all of their tutors. This means that all tutors who could not attend the program certification session or joined later must go through individual tutor certification.

Programs will not receive a PDF certificate. Rather, programs can verify their certified status on our Programs Index.

Program certification is a great way to ensure that all lessons held by the program are of higher quality. This is great for giving confidence to parents and ensuring that every tutor has a solid understanding of how to teach students. ALTO certified programs will be displayed separately from non-certified programs to give parents and students added reassurance. Programs will be notified if their certification has been revoked.
