Early Music Monday
By Richard Webb (2021 blog)
Early Music Monday is our weekly blog series dedicated to exploring the world of early music for all instrument groups including strings, keyboard, woodwind, brass, percussion, and vocal. Early music broadly refers to Western music from the Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque eras (500 to 1750), however these posts will put an emphasis on the Baroque era (1600-1750). Early Music Monday posts are written by cellist Richard Webb, a pioneer in the Baroque and early music revival movement.

About the Author
I am a baroque cellist, now retired from playing professionally. I studied music in London, and then became a founding member of the first period-instrument baroque orchestras in Britain since the 1700s: 'The Academy of Ancient Music', and 'The English Concert'. We recorded lots of instrumental baroque music from the 17th and 18th centuries - Purcell, Vivaldi, Bach, Handel etc. I was fortunate to have had the opportunity to tour with each of the orchestras - playing in countries in Europe, U.S., Canada, Japan, and Australia. I now live in the U.S., and for the last few years I have been helping to coach Davis High School Baroque Ensemble - a period-instrument string orchestra in California. I joined them on their tour of Austria and Italy in 2017, and will be including YouTube videos from the tour, and recordings by AAM, and EC, in 'Early Music Monday' posts.
